What is the Abortion Pill & How does it Work?
Although it is referred to as a pill (singular), the abortion pill actually consists of two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol.

Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone. Progesterone is needed for the pregnancy to grow inside the uterus. Without a steady supply of progesterone, the embryo does not get nutrients, the heartbeat stops, and the pregnancy stops growing.
The second medication, misoprostol, is taken within 24 to 48 hours after the first medication. This medication causes the uterus to contract, which is similar to labor or period cramps. The medication causes the cervix to soften, which expels the fetus. Many women are familiar with this medication because it is often used in smaller doses to induce labor of a full-term fetus.
These medications used together abort 95% of fetuses in the first 9 weeks after conception. However, they are less effective in pregnancies that are more established.

What are the Risks for Women?
There are complications when taking RU-486 or “the abortion pill” that you should be aware of.
Before taking RU-486, your healthcare provider needs to review your medical history. There are risks to taking this medication to end a pregnancy. They are as follows:
- Mifepristone can negatively interact with certain medications.
- Incomplete abortion, which may need to be followed by a surgical abortion. An incomplete abortion means the pregnancy is still in place and did not respond to the medications. Heavy bleeding, hemorrhage, a drop in blood pressure, and anemia could occur as a result.
- Damage to the uterus. Rupturing or tearing of the uterus has been reported when the RU-486 pill has been used after the eighth week of pregnancy. This damage can cause severe bleeding, death, or require a hysterectomy.
- Infection and septic shock. The risks of infection and septic shock are potentially life-threatening after a medical abortion. Sepsis is a medical emergency that occurs when an infection enters your bloodstream. The most common causes of septic shock after a medical abortion are pregnancy tissue remaining in the uterus and uterine infection.
- Severe pain. The misoprostol medication used in combination with RU-486 causes uterine cramping to expel the pregnancy, which can cause severe pain. The majority of women experience this pain.

- Have inherited porphyria (a rare disorder that can affect the liver and other organs)
- Have an intrauterine device (IUD) in place (it must be removed before taking mifepristone)
