The Birth Control implants, better known as the Nexplanon or Implanon, are
hormonal birth control devices placed subdermally (just under the skin) in the inner,
non-dominant arm.
How it Works
The Implant releases a hormone called “progestin”. This hormone does three things:
– Prevents an egg from being released from the ovary, which stops ovulation.
– Thins the lining of the uterus making it hard for implantation of the fertilized egg.
– Thickens the mucus in the cervix which makes it harder for sperm to reach the egg.

Implants have an expiration date and require removal. Removal can be done prior to expiration if side effects are being experienced.

Intrauterine Devices (IUDs) Removal Arcadia Area, AZ
The IUD, or intrauterine device, is a small T-shaped contraceptive device with a string attached to the end for removal. It is placed in the uterus to prevent pregnancy. If the strings are cut too short, it is harder for the IUD to be removed.
There are two types of IUDs: copper and hormonal.

The body naturally responds to the IUD as a foreign object in different ways. This response manifests as the possible side effects listed above.
The copper and hormonal IUDs are meant to prevent pregnancy by changing the cervical mucus and by thinning the lining of the uterus. The hormones in the hormonal IUD are not limited to the uterus and can affect the body systemically.
There have been cases where women have become pregnant while an IUD is in the uterus. Removing an IUD while pregnant carries a risk of causing miscarriage.

The fee for an office visit to remove an IUD is $35.00. If you think the strings are too short for a successful IUD removal, you can let us know when you make the appointment. If we are unable to remove the IUD, a referral for an ultrasound-guided IUD removal will be provided. In that case, an ultrasound is required to see if the IUD is still in the uterus or if it has already come out.
