What is Trichomoniasis?
Trichomoniasis is a curable sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite called Trichomonas Vaginalis. Like other STI/STDs Trichomoniasis is spread by sexual contact. It is contagious and an individual may spread it without knowing they have it. You cannot spread Trichomoniasis by sharing food, drinks, kissing, holding hands, or through other forms of nonsexual contact.
Symptoms for Women
- Thin (or sometimes foamy) white, yellow or greenish vaginal discharge that has a bad odor
- Irritation, soreness or redness around the opening of the vagina
- Pain or discomfort during intercourse or when urinating
Symptoms for Men
- Froth-like discharge from the penis
- Burning after ejaculation or painful urination
- Irritation or itching inside the penis
Testing and Cost for Trichomoniasis
Phoenix Women’s Clinic offers testing for Trichomoniasis for $35. Our provider will do pelvic exam to collect vaginal fluid using a cotton swab. The provider will then check the sample under the microscope for signs of Trichomoniasis.
If you have Trichomoniasis, our provider may suggest other STI/STD testing. If you are positive for Trichomoniasis, a prescription will be sent electronically to the pharmacy of your choice.
