Phoenix Women’s Clinic’s well-woman exam includes a pap smear, manual pelvic exam, manual breast exam, and wet mount.

The pap smear is a screening of the cervical cells and tests for the presence of precancerous or cancerous cells on the cervix (the cervix is the opening to the uterus). The cervical cells collected will go into a Thinprep collection bottle and be sent to the lab. Pap smears should be started at 21 years old and the frequency depends on risk factors for cervical cancers.

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus that has many different strains. It can cause cancer or precancerous cells on the cervix. Some strains are benign but can cause warts. Other strains can cause cervical cancer in women. Cervical cancer often takes years or even decades to develop after an individual gets HPV. A pap smear does not specifically test for HPV but can detect cellular changes caused by HPV. Early detection of abnormal cervical cells will mean a better outcome for early treatment before HPV causes a bigger health issue.

After the pap smear, the provider will then proceed with a manual pelvic exam and feel for any abnormalities on the ovaries.

Your well-women exam includes a manual breast exam, where the provider will feel the breast for any lumps. If a mammogram or breast ultrasound is needed, our provider will give you an order to schedule an appointment at an imaging center.

The final part of the well women exam is a wet mount. The practitioner will check for vaginal infections including yeast, bacterial vaginosis, and trichomoniasis in office.

Phoenix Women’s Clinic offers the well-woman exam for $60.00, which includes the Office visit and Lab fee.

You can add HPV type testing for an additional $50.00 fee.
Other labs including STD testing can be added to your visit for a small fee.
