What Is Plan C?
Plan C is commonly referred to as the abortion pill. It’s also known by other names, including medication abortion, medical abortion, chemical abortion, RU-486, Mifepristone, and Mifeprex®. Additionally, “Plan C” can refer to an organization that offers resources and information about the abortion pill. These terms are often used interchangeably.
How Does Plan C Work?
Plan C involves a two-step process using two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol.
- Step 1: Mifepristone is the first pill taken. It works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is essential for maintaining pregnancy. Without progesterone, the embryo can no longer grow, ultimately leading to its termination.

Additionally, if you feel generally unwell—such as weakness, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea—especially for more than 24 hours after taking misoprostol, you could have a serious infection and should contact a healthcare provider right away.
- Severe Abdominal or Pelvic Pain: Any intense pain in these areas should also prompt a visit to a medical professional.
