Mycoplasma genitalium, or Mgen, is a specific strain of bacteria that is sexually transmitted. It can cause infection in the cervix (the opening to the uterus in women), inside the penis, or in the rectum. It is becoming a more common STI. In a study, it was found in 16% of sexual health clinic patients from 6 different US cities.

Mgen is often present with no symptoms. If present, symptoms can include discharge from the vagina or penis and a burning sensation when urinating. If your partner has Mgen or any of the symptoms it is important to see a provider at Phoenix Women’s Clinic for testing.

Mgen is transmitted through vaginal or anal sex, even from someone who has no symptoms. There is still research being done on whether it can be transmitted through oral sex.

Having any vaginal or anal sex with someone can put you at risk for Mgen and other STIs. The only way to completely prevent any STIs, including Mgen is to abstain from any sexual activity. Only having sex with a long-term exclusive partner who does not have Mgen or other STIs is the best way to lower the risk of Mgen or other STIs.

Mgen is associated with other dangerous and potentially life changing conditions. In men it may cause urethritis, or inflammation of the urethra. This, if left untreated, can lead to infection of the bladder, testicles, or prostate. In women it has been linked to inflammation of the cervix, pelvic inflammatory disease, preterm delivery, miscarriages, and infertility. It’s important to get tested if you are at risk or have any symptoms so you can be treated as soon as possible.

Testing is done with a urine sample. It can be done at Phoenix Women’s Clinic for a $40 lab fee and can be done in combination with other STD/STI tests for a fee. It is important to get tested if you are at risk or have any symptoms.

Mgen is treatable with antibiotics. It is important to take the entire course of antibiotics, to not skip doses, and to never share prescribed medications with anyone else. Failure to comply with the provider’s instructions regarding these medications can contribute to the development of more antibiotic-resistant strains of Mgen. Mgen is already resistant to some antibiotics, and it is on the CDC Watch List of Antimicrobial Resistance Threats. If you finish the prescribed course of antibiotics and still have symptoms after a few days, return to Phoenix Women’s Clinic.
