What is a verification of pregnancy? Do I need one?

     Verification of pregnancy is a medical document stating a pregnancy was confirmed either by medical grade testing or by imaging, such as ultrasound. This is important as other clinics will require a verification before providing other services, such as prenatal care of an abortion. Some clinics will charge a fee for verification. 

Do I need an ultrasound prior to an abortion?

     An ultrasound is imperative prior to an abortion as it can determine if the pregnancy is progressing in a normal fashion. Limited ultrasound verifies three things: If the pregnancy is in the uterus, dating of the pregnancy, and if the pregnancy is viable (if heartbeat is present). These factors are important as miscarriage occurs in one out of five pregnancies, and to ensure there is not an ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy outside of the uterus). 

Do I need STD/STI testing before an abortion?

     If you have had more than one partner in the last 12 months. It is imperative to be tested prior to an abortion. Having an STD/STI at the time of an abortion can cause the infection to spread to the reproductive tract, possibly leading to PID (Pelvic inflammatory disease). When left untreated, PID may lead to infertility and ectopic pregnancy in the future. 

How do I know how far along I am in my pregnancy?

     Dating for pregnancy can generally be estimated by LMP (last menstrual period). However, there are several factors in a woman’s health history that may not provide accurate dating by LMP. Measurements of the pregnancy will provide accurate dating. Phoenix Women’s Clinic offers the free medical grade urine pregnancy test and consultation that goes over these factors. Our clinic also offers limited ultrasound to get measurements of the pregnancy and provide accurate dating.
