The body naturally responds to the IUD as a foreign object in different ways. This response manifests as the possible side effects listed above.

The copper and hormonal IUDs are meant to prevent pregnancy by changing the cervical mucus and by thinning the lining of the uterus. The hormones in the hormonal IUD are not limited to the uterus and can affect the body systemically. 

There have been cases where women have become pregnant while an IUD is in the uterus. Removing an IUD while pregnant carries a risk of causing miscarriage.

IUD Removal & Cost

The fee for an office visit to remove an IUD is $35.00. If you think the strings are too short for a successful IUD removal, you can let us know when you make the appointment. If we are unable to remove the IUD, a referral for an ultrasound-guided IUD removal will be provided. In that case, an ultrasound is required to see if the IUD is still in the uterus or if it has already come out.

How is the IUD removed?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      The provider will insert a speculum to locate the string. If the strings are visible, the provider will insert forceps and use the strings to remove the IUD. It is a quick procedure. Can I remove the IUD at home?                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            It is not recommended to remove your IUD at home. There are risks of complications, such as perforation of the uterine line, dislodging the IUD and rendering it ineffective, breaking the IUD, and infection.
